News Update  17th August 2015

We’ve chosen the TKA in Clacton on 27th September and not the event in Docklands as this only had open grade categories for both kata and kumite.

Please let me know ASAP if you are competing.

SUNDERLAND WINTER COURSE

Forms are now available, please collect yours from the desk ASAP.  There is a reduction for early entries – details on the form.

Several of us have already booked our hotel room/s and it’s best to do this now.

You must make your own travel arrangements, some choose to drive up.  However, advance train tickets are now on sale but going fast.  I have booked my train for £56 return with Grand Central railways.  Check their website for child fares.

The Saturday night party is ‘Halloween theme’ and I know Sensei Gillespie already has his costume!

Would be nice to have bigger numbers from Kaichou Kai this year, so please do your best to attend.

Lastly, I know it’s holiday season and many of you have been away but I’m also aware that some are just not making it a priority to maintain their training during this period.  This is very disappointing but at the same time demonstrates who the truly dedicated students are.  Don’t be surprised if you are not ready to grade in September – if you’re not training, then firstly you won’t have the required attendance and secondly you won’t be prepared.

Well done to all those who have continued to attend regularly throughout the holiday period and thank you to parents for encouraging them to do so.

Best regards,

Moira Barber 7th Dan – Chief Instructor

Grading  28th June 2015
A new 1st dan black belt in Granville Harris. Well done. Full results to follow.

Newsletter  14th May 2015
TKA COMPETITON, CLACTON – 26.04.15

Well done to everyone who competed at the above event.  Of course it’s nice to be placed but in general even those who didn’t get a result showed improvement in their performances.  For a few I think it served as a good lesson in just how much you need to practice and prepare for competition.

This is important if you are going to not only beat your opponent but in some cases the officials too!

As always with competition, some decisions went in our favour whilst others worked against us.  The only way to win over this is to make it so clear that you have scored or performed the best kata that the decision has to go your way.  It’s also about getting known and that is clearly starting to happen now, so we’re moving in the right direction.   Results below: -

KATA                                                                        KUMITE

ALEXA MARSTON – 2ND                                         ALEXA MARSTON – 1ST & 2ND

RORY ARMSTRONG-SMITH – 3RD                         JOSH HARRIS – 3RD

RORY & JADEN TEAM – 3RD                                  BEVERLEY JONES – 3RD

WADE & MASON TEAM – 3RD                                JADEN YOUNG – 3RD

RORY, JADEN, SONNY TEAM – 3RD

Let’s go for GOLD next time gang!

QUIZ NIGHT – MARCH

Absolutely fantastic turn out and our biggest one ever; thank you to everyone who supported it & to Beverley Jones family for donating as they were unable to attend.

This night is all about having a good attendance as good numbers make the evening more fun.  It was good to see some new faces join the regulars.  We hope you enjoyed it and look forward to seeing you at future quiz nights.

The amount raised for the fund was £295.00, we were therefore able to donate £100 towards the teams taking part in the above event.

Our aim is to keep building the fund up now and this was a brilliant start, so thanks again.

HORNCHURCH KAICHOU KAI

For those who may not already be aware, we now have another club within the association.  Sensei David has opened up Hornchurch Kaichou Kai.  We’d like to wish him good luck in the development of the club and welcome his students to the association.

ONE DAY COURSE – 09.05.15 – CAMPION SCHOOL

Once again numbers were up from previous years; it seems each year we get more students attending and it’s great to see its popularity growing each year.  We had 87 students on the course from a variety of clubs, which provided an excellent opportunity for our members to train alongside different people, which is always beneficial in some way or another.  The feedback has been good and people are already confirming their place for next year!

It was also pleasing to see that Kaichou Kai main clubs had close to 100% attendance with only a very few missing.  Hopefully they will attend next year, together with everyone returning and help us to make it 100 attendees!

Those who did attend were witness to Sensei Martyn being upgraded to a very well deserved 5th Dan.  Sensei Martyn has been extremely supportive over many years and played a big part in Kaichou Kai’s development.  He has always encouraged his students to attend extra sessions at Rainham dojo on a regular basis and as a result his students are very much a part of the association.

Many congrats from us all.

EUKF (English United Karate Association) – Referee Course

On Sunday 10th May, Sensei’s Martyn, David, Sampei Mike & myself attended the above course, organised by the EUKF and run by the EKC (English karate council chief referee Sensei Terry Pottage.

It was a very informative course and we are all more coherent about the current rules that are in place for kumite & kata.  We hope therefore to run our own association course soon so our students also keep up-to-date with changes.

EUKF SQUAD TRAINING SESSIONS

Kumite squad training sessions are now in place at Sensei Simon Kidd’s dojo in Brentwood.  The first was a couple of weeks ago for 16 years and above to prepare for the forthcoming Senior EKC Championships in Sheffield on 17th May.  A EUKF squad was selected and we wish them luck at the forthcoming event.  Unfortunately for us we didn’t have any students attend the squad selections but I’m hoping we will soon have students make the squad and attain their EUKF national badge.  There’s a natural progress and following that students can then try to gain their England badge for international events.  It’s therefore a necessity to get involved and make the squads/competitions etc., to gain recognition if you wish to progress as a competitor.

The date was given at short notice, so I’m hoping with more warning next time our people can get there.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS (note for your diary please)

MAY 30:               JUNIOR KUMITE SQUAD, RAINHAM (Sensei Luke for details)

JUNE 6/7:            WUKF (world united karate federation) CHILDREN / CADET CHAMPIONSHIPS

                                BELGIUM

13:                PRE-GRADING CLASSES, RAINHAM (must attend if grading)

27:                GRADING (must have attended the one day course)

There are some other dates in the second part of the year but the most important for us is the

WINTER COURSE, SUNDERLAND 31ST OCTOBER & 1ST NOVEMBER.

The regulars have already booked, together with some first timers.  I’m really pleased to have a few more showing interest however there are so many still who we would like to see attend.  Well in fact we’d like to see you all attend!  Remember your participation in things are taken into consideration when you eventually grade for black belt – and we have long memories!

If you are going but not yet booked then I would advise you do so immediately before prices go up.

There’s really no excuse as there’s been plenty of notice and time to save or make arrangements, so please do your best to support this event and join us for the weekend.
